Telling Time

Objective: Students will know how to tell and write time by looking at a hand and digital clock.

Standard Objective 5: Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
  • Knowing how to cut videos shorter, ask questions as they watch the videos, and be able to talk to the students as they go through the video is super helpful! This was definitely one of the tools that I will use as I go into teaching. It is so helpful as we are moving into an increasing technology world, where those are the things the students will be able to relate to.
  • I think the kids will love doing this. It will be a different way for them to learn and get to use the technology they are around all day and probably know how to use very well. This would help some students want to do their homework more because it's not just another assignment on paper and it is really easy for me to see what they were able to catch onto and what needs some more help.
  • I am planning on using this at the very beginning to teach them about how to tell time. This video tells all the parts of a clock and how you say what you see on the clock. It goes through it step by step and he says it as the kids can see what he is doing. This could also be used at the end to wrap up how to tell time and see how much they were able to remember and if I need to go over anything before we move onto the next topic.

End of the Year Newsletter

Objective: Parents and students will be able to know of the events and news that will be happening for the end of the school year.

Standard Objective 5: Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
  • Knowing how to create a newsletter is going to be such a useful thing as I go into an elementary school. I will for sure use this tool as I continue in my career. I am really glad that this tool was available for me to learn how to use.
  • I don't think that the student's need to know how to use this. It took a lot of time and it is too high up in technology for them to be able to use. I think this is great for teachers and in higher education but definitely not for elementary students.
  • I will change this newsletter for each month but my plan is to give it out at the beginning of the month. That way the parents will know about the things going on in the classroom and if there is anything I need to know about by the end of the month, they will have plenty of time to get it to me.

Water Cycle

Objective: Students will be able to understand the different parts of the Water Cycle and be able to tell what each part does.

Standard Objective 5: Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
  • Learning how to use a Mind Map was very fun and interesting. I really enjoyed learning how to use this tool and I will for sure this tool later. This tool is super fun and could be used for many different lesson plans and it will be a good way to help the kids learn in different ways.
  • I don't think little kids would be able to use this tool by themselves but if they had adult help I think they could have a lot of fun. The older kids would be able to use this and it could help them learn in a more fun and interactive way.
  • I would use this presentation to either show at the beginning when they are just learning the material or at the end to rap up and see how much they have learned. It would be good in many different situations and would be a good way to mix up the routine and learn from a different tool that they could see in their every day lives.

Smart Cookie Party!

Objective: To let parents/family know about the end of year party where the kids will show all that they have learned from 1st grade.

Standard Objective 5: Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
  • Knowing how to make a flyer was really helpful! I am pretty sure that I will use this as time goes on. Not just for education but this tool can be used for almost any activity, event, etc. This is a great way to let parents and the students know about what is going on in class and these flyers can be used in many different ways in the classroom.
  • I think letting first graders try and make a flyer would be kind of complicated for them. There are a lot of steps and I could see many ways where they would get frustrated and quit. When they get older and can do more things on their own then I think this would be a great tool for them to get familiar with.
  • I am planning on using this flyer to give to each of the child's parents. It tells them all of the details of what we will be doing, important times, when it is, and what it is we are trying to accomplish with it.

Phases of the Moon

Objective: The students will learn the different phases of the moon, will be able to tell the differences, and will know which part of the moon we see on earth.

Standard Objective 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.
  • This was a really fun tool to learn and I am pretty sure I will use this one as I continue my education degree. It has so many options, different styles, and different ways you could use it to teach your students. I will for sure keep this one in mind.
  • As the students grow older I think they could for sure use this tool for presentation projects or just showing information about a topic. It would create an easy assignment for me and it would help the students to be creative. It also helps that it is free. I'm not sure the younger kids would be able to use it because they are still learning important skills that they need to know before this tool can become useful to them.
  • I'm not entirely sure when I would use this because I feel that it could go anywhere. It could go at the beginning when introducing the topic, become a review as you continue to talk about it or it could be used at the end to wrap it up and quiz them to see how much they have learned. Right now, I am thinking to use it to introduce them to the topic. It is simple and tells them what each thing is and adds a fun way to learn something new.

All about Martin Luther King Jr.

Objective: Students will know who Martin Luther King Jr. is and why we celebrate this day every year and why he is important.

Standard Objective 5: Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
  • This tool was very good to learn but it takes a lot of time to create something using this tool. I think this has a good purpose for certain topics, like showing a history of an event, person, animal, etc. It has some good uses but it is only effective if used in the proper setting.
  • I think the kids would like learning from this because it is a different type of learning style. It would be a good thing to mix up in the schedule so that they don't get bored and stop paying attention. I also think this tool needs to be short and sweet because even a timeline can go on forever and students will stop paying attention.
  • I was planning on using this tool to introduce to them who Martin Luther King Jr. was and what he did that changed everything. Going from there it would be good to give them a paper and have them write down a couple of facts about him. Then once that is done, I think drawing him and making a book out of the facts they found of him would really help the kids to understand how important he was and what he did for many people.

Weather & Seasons

Objective: Students will be able to tell what the different seasons are and what weather fits into each season.

Educational Technology Standard 5: Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

  • This tool was fun to learn how to use because it is a lot like a power point but it has some different features and designs to it. I can see me using this tool as time goes on but not all the time or it will get boring and the kids will loose interest in what I am trying to teach them.
  • I think the students would like to use this as a part of their learning but it would need to be for small amounts of time. There is only so long that a child can sit still and look at a slide show and pay attention. It will be best used in fun ways to capture and keep their attention for a little bit.
  • I am using this power point to introduce the topic of weather and the seasons. It could also be modified to be a quiz or a review over the topic. It is a good way to get the kids into the topic and have some interaction as they start into any new topic that they have heard before but haven't gone deep into. I think it is a nice way to get kids into the technology that is around them and it is a pretty simple tool that they could learn how to use it.

All about punctuation!

Objective: Students will learn how to end a sentence correctly using the correct punctuation.

Standard Technology Standard 5: Use technology tools (e.g., multimedia authoring, presentation, web tools, digital cameras, scanners) for individual and collaborative writing, communication, and publishing activities to create knowledge products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.

  • I loved getting to use this new tool! It was so much fun creating a quiz and I know for sure that I will be using this tool very often. It will help a lot with grading and seeing how well concepts are being understood among the students.
  • I think the students will really come to love these little quizzes or homework assignments. We are moving into a teaching world that is going to be using technology all the time and really no pen and paper will be used. This will become a great way to get students used to using technology in a good way and it will help further their education in many ways.
  • I haven't decided which way I will use this quiz. I think it is a good enough quiz to be taken before or after teaching the concept. It can be a good review after you have taught the subject or it can be used to see where the students stand with their punctuation. Anyway, I think it is a great way to have the students go online and use the technology they are around every second of their lives.

School vs. Neighborhood

Objective: Students will learn the different people that work in the world around them and will be able to know who goes where.

Education Technology Standard 7: Use telecommunications and on-line resources (e.g., email, online discussions, web environments) to participate in collaborative problem-solving activities to develop solutions or products for audiences inside and outside the classroom.
  • Using Google Docs has been a great tool to get familiar with. It allows you to do many things that are similar to a word program but it is useful that it automatically saves for you. This way if you have lots of things on your mind and forget to save there is no problem. I think this tool will become the most used tool because of how convenient it is and how it connects to your email. It just makes everything easy and accessible.
  • I think as the world progresses and technology is put more into school this is a tool that many kids will learn to use. I think it is helpful for the older kids but not the younger kids. They are still learning to write their words and can't type very fast or at all. So I don't think the kids will need to use this tool just yet. More is taken out when they can see what they are writing and how each letter is formed.
  • Knowing who people are around them is super important and it allows the students to connect the dots in their minds of the people they see. To make sure that they fully understand, I will go through who works at our school with their names and what jobs they see outside of school. Afterwards, I will give them this worksheet and from this they will show me what they know and where each person fits in the world. If this doesn't work, I will make a similar worksheet or try to help them understand in a different way.

Germs Book

This is a great book explaining how a boy gets sick and his friend brings over a lot of gifts for him. In the back of this book it is explains how we spread germs and what we can do to prevent it.
In the back it also shows how to make 'Get Well Books'.

Food for Fun!

Objective: Students will learn and be able to apply what good foods they need to eat to keep their bodies healthy.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • Even though YouTube can be used wrong I believe that the educational videos on there are important tools to help me in my teaching. There is a lot of good that I could use in my future lessons and I have seen how much kids get excited about watching a video, even if it is a couple of minutes. It breaks up the original schedule and adds some excitement.
  • As I have said before, this is tool can become a time waster. It would be best if the students didn't use this tool. They will get stuck on it and won't come out for a very long time. I have done that a couple of times and it is such a downer to my day.
  • In the end to make sure they understand. I will give them a worksheet that has pictures of different foods. With this they will have two columns, they will cut out the pictures, and glue them into the correct place. If they are correct they can color the pictures, if not I will help them learn it in a different way so that they can understand.

Germs, Germs, Stay Away!

Objective: Students will understand the importance of washing their hands and the results of what not washing their hands do to them and others.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • YouTube can be a very good tool to have and use the content it has to enhance learning experiences and gain more knowledge. This tool was really fun to use and I think it has some really great potential in helping others when they are struggling or need some more clarification.
  • I think the kids can use this tool for educational purposes and it could help them learn faster. It can be very distracting and time consuming at times so it needs to be used in a very specific way and to help further their education.
  • To make sure that they have got the steps for washing their hands. I will give out a writing assignment where they will have 3 steps where they will explain what they do first, second, and then last. This will help them to grasp the concept in a different way by seeing and forming into words what needs to happen.

Verbalizing Vowels

Objective: Students will learn and be able to identify the difference between both the short and long vowel sounds.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • Both of these videos are super cute ways to teach kids how to pronounciate the different sounds that vowels make. It was fun listening to these and trying to figure out ways that I could teach it and incorporate these videos into my lessons. This is a really great tool to have and could be put to some really great use.
  • If the students need some more practice I think they could use this tool to find these videos (with an adults help) to be able to re-listen and replay as many times as they need to, to fully grasp the concept. Otherwise this tool can be kind of distracting and can turn into a time waster. If the students will use it for productive reasons then they can use it, otherwise I will advice them to not use it.
  • To make sure they are getting the concept I will give them a tube where they can say the vowel and they can also hear what they are saying. Hearing themselves say it will help them to self correct what they are doing and try figuring out how to fix it to match the sound the vowel needs to make.

Magic with Words

Objective: Students will learn and show what the "Magic E" does to a short vowel sound when it's put at the end of a word.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • It was a lot of fun finding these videos to enhance the learning experience for these kids. Videos always have the ability to draw kids in and so I believe that this will be a very useful tool as I continue.
  • I won't have them go out and find videos because that is scary and there is a lot of things that need to be avoided. It would be best if I just showed them the ones that would benefit their learning experience. If they would like to use this tool I would suggest that they have adult supervision on how to type in certain things and make sure what they are watching is appropriate.
  • In the end I will have words and the magic e wand and they will have to tell me what happens when the magic e is attached to the word. It will be a fun way to have the students participate and I think it will be a great success.

All about Ms. Holmstead!

Hello everyone! I'm going to start by sharing a little about myself. My name is Camille Holmstead and I am the middle of five kids. I was born and raised in Utah all my life. I graduated from Lehi High School and did ballroom, plays, and interned at an Elementary School. I am now a full-time student at Utah Valley University studying Elementary Education with a minor in music. Music is a big part of my life. I have played the piano, flute, and organ and I love it! I love being able to express feelings through the music that I play.
Some of my hobbies include: four wheeling, hiking, playing with children, or playing the piano/organ. In my free time I love curling up with a good book, watch movies, or hanging with my friends. I can't wait to see how my life will unfold and the adventures I will be able to take and participate in!

Learning by Numbers

Objective: Students will learn strategies of counting, adding, and subtracting and will be able to tell the difference between them.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • I really enjoyed using Pinterest to gather ideas and activities for my future lessons. There are some really cool worksheets and activities that will make learning math fun for the kids. I'm excited to see what I can create using this tool.
  • I won't have the kids use Pinterest because I feel that it would be too much of a distraction for them and it wouldn't help them learn the material they need to. I want the students to be able to use the activities/worksheets I found using this tool because I believe it will help get the concept across to them in a fun way.
  • At the end, to make sure they all understand what they've been taught. I plan on giving them a worksheet with different problems on it and they will fill out if the problem needs to be added or subtracted. If they understand we will move on, if not then I will reteach in another way. Below is a link to my board.

Doubles Book

This is a great book to get kids into learning what doubles are. It is a great attention grabber and the little kids will love to have this as a treat for finishing their work.
