Germs Book

This is a great book explaining how a boy gets sick and his friend brings over a lot of gifts for him. In the back of this book it is explains how we spread germs and what we can do to prevent it.
In the back it also shows how to make 'Get Well Books'.

Food for Fun!

Objective: Students will learn and be able to apply what good foods they need to eat to keep their bodies healthy.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • Even though YouTube can be used wrong I believe that the educational videos on there are important tools to help me in my teaching. There is a lot of good that I could use in my future lessons and I have seen how much kids get excited about watching a video, even if it is a couple of minutes. It breaks up the original schedule and adds some excitement.
  • As I have said before, this is tool can become a time waster. It would be best if the students didn't use this tool. They will get stuck on it and won't come out for a very long time. I have done that a couple of times and it is such a downer to my day.
  • In the end to make sure they understand. I will give them a worksheet that has pictures of different foods. With this they will have two columns, they will cut out the pictures, and glue them into the correct place. If they are correct they can color the pictures, if not I will help them learn it in a different way so that they can understand.

Germs, Germs, Stay Away!

Objective: Students will understand the importance of washing their hands and the results of what not washing their hands do to them and others.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • YouTube can be a very good tool to have and use the content it has to enhance learning experiences and gain more knowledge. This tool was really fun to use and I think it has some really great potential in helping others when they are struggling or need some more clarification.
  • I think the kids can use this tool for educational purposes and it could help them learn faster. It can be very distracting and time consuming at times so it needs to be used in a very specific way and to help further their education.
  • To make sure that they have got the steps for washing their hands. I will give out a writing assignment where they will have 3 steps where they will explain what they do first, second, and then last. This will help them to grasp the concept in a different way by seeing and forming into words what needs to happen.

Verbalizing Vowels

Objective: Students will learn and be able to identify the difference between both the short and long vowel sounds.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • Both of these videos are super cute ways to teach kids how to pronounciate the different sounds that vowels make. It was fun listening to these and trying to figure out ways that I could teach it and incorporate these videos into my lessons. This is a really great tool to have and could be put to some really great use.
  • If the students need some more practice I think they could use this tool to find these videos (with an adults help) to be able to re-listen and replay as many times as they need to, to fully grasp the concept. Otherwise this tool can be kind of distracting and can turn into a time waster. If the students will use it for productive reasons then they can use it, otherwise I will advice them to not use it.
  • To make sure they are getting the concept I will give them a tube where they can say the vowel and they can also hear what they are saying. Hearing themselves say it will help them to self correct what they are doing and try figuring out how to fix it to match the sound the vowel needs to make.

Magic with Words

Objective: Students will learn and show what the "Magic E" does to a short vowel sound when it's put at the end of a word.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • It was a lot of fun finding these videos to enhance the learning experience for these kids. Videos always have the ability to draw kids in and so I believe that this will be a very useful tool as I continue.
  • I won't have them go out and find videos because that is scary and there is a lot of things that need to be avoided. It would be best if I just showed them the ones that would benefit their learning experience. If they would like to use this tool I would suggest that they have adult supervision on how to type in certain things and make sure what they are watching is appropriate.
  • In the end I will have words and the magic e wand and they will have to tell me what happens when the magic e is attached to the word. It will be a fun way to have the students participate and I think it will be a great success.

All about Ms. Holmstead!

Hello everyone! I'm going to start by sharing a little about myself. My name is Camille Holmstead and I am the middle of five kids. I was born and raised in Utah all my life. I graduated from Lehi High School and did ballroom, plays, and interned at an Elementary School. I am now a full-time student at Utah Valley University studying Elementary Education with a minor in music. Music is a big part of my life. I have played the piano, flute, and organ and I love it! I love being able to express feelings through the music that I play.
Some of my hobbies include: four wheeling, hiking, playing with children, or playing the piano/organ. In my free time I love curling up with a good book, watch movies, or hanging with my friends. I can't wait to see how my life will unfold and the adventures I will be able to take and participate in!

Learning by Numbers

Objective: Students will learn strategies of counting, adding, and subtracting and will be able to tell the difference between them.

Educational Technology Standard 8: Use technology resources (e.g., calculators, data collection probes, videos, educational software) for problem-solving, self-directed learning, and extended learning activities.

  • I really enjoyed using Pinterest to gather ideas and activities for my future lessons. There are some really cool worksheets and activities that will make learning math fun for the kids. I'm excited to see what I can create using this tool.
  • I won't have the kids use Pinterest because I feel that it would be too much of a distraction for them and it wouldn't help them learn the material they need to. I want the students to be able to use the activities/worksheets I found using this tool because I believe it will help get the concept across to them in a fun way.
  • At the end, to make sure they all understand what they've been taught. I plan on giving them a worksheet with different problems on it and they will fill out if the problem needs to be added or subtracted. If they understand we will move on, if not then I will reteach in another way. Below is a link to my board.

Doubles Book

This is a great book to get kids into learning what doubles are. It is a great attention grabber and the little kids will love to have this as a treat for finishing their work.
